Yuri Alexandrovich Falik

An appeal to participants in the Yuri Falik International
Competition for Composers

“I am delighted that the new international competition for composers will be named for my dear, creative friend, the composer, conductor and cellist Yuri Falik. I am particularly pleased that this competition is organized by cellists, in memory of their teacher.”

Natalia Grigorievna Gutman,
Honoured Artist of the RSFSR, People’s Artist of the USSR,
State Prize of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“The innovative idea of creating an ensemble of eight cellos has already given rise to many wonderful new works. The name of Yuri Falik further raises the bar for the competition. I am confident that we shall see new creativity for the Cello Ensemble under the direction of Olga Rudneva.”

Andrei Yakovlevich Eshpai,
People’s Artist of the RSFSR, People’s Artist of the USSR,
Lenin Prize and State Prizes of the USSR,
Professor

“I welcome participants to the competition named for the gifted composer, conductor and cellist Yuri Falik. Currently in Russia and throughout the world there are many excellent cellists of all generations. The already extensive cello repertoire needs to be further updated. I wish my colleagues every success in this creative venture.”

Sergei Mikhailovich Slonimsky,
Honoured Artist of the RSFSR, People’s Artist of the RSFSR,
State Prize of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“We heartily endorse the idea of the Yuri Falik International Competition for Composers. We are delighted to know that this competition is dedicated to the name of our contemporary, an outstanding musician and creator. The most valuable feature of the forthcoming event is that it does not come ‘from the top’, it is not about composers promoting their own work. The competition was initiated by performers, in this case an enthusiastic cellist Olga Rudneva, director of the St Petersburg Cello Ensemble. These musicians not only wish to enrich their repertoire but also to stimulate the creation of new works worthy of performance at prestigious venues in many cities around the world. This will doubtless inspire working composers to create pieces that will show their finest musical quality.
From my heart I wish the participants in the contest great music, I wish the judges a rigorous and fair approach, and to the musical community the joyful experience of discovering new creations.”

Grigory Ovshievich Korchmar,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,
Professor and Chairman of the St Petersburg Union of Composers,
Artistic Director of the ‘St Petersburg Musical Spring’ Festival

“The first St Petersburg international competition for composers, named after the prominent composer, cellist, conductor and teacher Yuri Falik, is a happy event for all who knew him and had the good fortune to talk with him and share his creativity. This is a fine memorial to a great master, who was an example of devoted service to art. I hope that this competition will take its rightful place in the cultural life of St Petersburg, and I would like to wish all participants the bright spark of creative achievement.”

Vadim Davidovich Bibergan,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,
People’s Artist of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“I am pleased to welcome this competition for composers. Undoubtedly the rich ensemble of cellos has attracted great interest in creatively minded musicians, and will help to create vibrant concert works. I sincerely wish success to the participants in the competition.”

Vladimir Ivanovich Tsytovich,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“For any composer who decides to take part in a creative competition, it is always an exciting and significant event, which will become an important milestone in the endless path to professional excellence. A competition gives us all an opportunity to discover new works and new names, which I hope will further enrich the great world of music. Well, to win you need skill, inspiration and… a little bit of luck. I wish all of these to the participants in our competition!”

Vyacheslav Lavrentievich Nagovitsin,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“I hope that all competitors remember that music is the art of sound. They draw notes on paper – which then enable the performer to realise the creation. And I wish you good luck, of course, because any competition still a bit of a lottery.”

Anatoly Alexandrovich Korolev,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,
Professor

“Participation in this competition, named in honour of Yuri Alexandrovich Falik, the distinguished composer, cellist and conductor, requires of you a high degree of professionalism, an open-minded and interested acceptance of new art, honest and selfless service to music…
I wish you inspiration, hard work and good luck, friends!”

Sergey Alexandrovich Oskolkov,
Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation,

The judges and organizers of the competition wish participants success.
